There are 10 jumps in the ring, beginning with a small 85cm as the first fence. Number 4 is a two-strided double, the first fence of which is an oxer, the second is an upright. The remaining jumps vary from 85-90cm, with number 3 and 9 as oxers. They all contain fillers of some kind. The second rider will wait in an area boxed off with poles, and the riders must pass a whip before the second rider can go. Time starts from the first rider landing over the first jump, and ends with the second rider landing over the final fence. Fastest clear wins!
Leo knew his brother had not been hugely interested in this class, but Leo had signed Logan up to join him in the pairs all the same. It would just be a bit of fun, and if they happened to win - well hey, all the better for the scoreboard! Leo had chosen to take Phoenix round, as his more accomplished of the two horses.. and speedier. With the height sitting at 90cm, it was a walk in the park for the scopey chestnut but if they went fast, they might risk a pole or two. He gave the horse a good warm up and within what felt like moments, he was called in to start the class.
He waited for Logan to get settled in his corner, giving him a quick fist bump as he jig jogged past and headed for his own start area. He changed his whip to his left hand, ready to pass over easier to Logan who would be on his left when he approached. The bell dinged, and Leo - having wound his mount thoroughly up - shot off like a bullet. They tucked tight into the corners, cutting off more than he dared, and the chestnut gelding ate his heart out on the course, doing what he loved best - going fast and showing off! It felt like a he flew round with barely a mistake made. Leo heard the final pole give a little rattle as they took a line he barely dared to take.. but it paid off, and as he approached Logan at breakneck speed, Phoenix slammed the breaks on like a Western and Leo all but threw his brother the whip. Not competitive at all. "GET YOUR ASS GOING!"
Bandit jig jogged under Logan's careful seat, his mouth light as he played with the bit, but the readiness to explode was barely under control. The bay was picking up on the electricity of the atmosphere, and he was raring to go. As Leo shouted at Logan to get his ass moving, he let the bay leap forward out of his hands, flying for the first jump. He was well aware of the pressure to win, and how competitive his brother was - especially compared to himself. He would do his best, and whilst Bandit was fast and careful, he had a habit of forgetting to pick his feet up when he got too excited.
Like now. Logan winced as he heard a pole fall - Leo would kill him for that one, but perhaps if he was kick enough he might be able to make some time up. He turned the bay gelding on a dime to spin around a wing, cut through a space that was barely there, and jump the next fence from almost a stand still. The pole rolled off and Logan grimaced - oh Leo was so going to kill him for that one. He let the gelding fly the last couple, taking out a few hairy strides, rattling another pole but leaving it up - they crossed the line in a decent time, but he knew with the two poles down it wouldn't be hard to beat them. "Good lad," he praised the gelding, patting him and letting him walk out on a long rein to cool of and catch him breath. He was proud of him - he'd done everything Logan had asked, they'd just been unlucky.
LEONARDO SAMUEL WHITE and LOGAN JASPER WHITEfinish with eight faults and a time of 68 seconds on Time Paradoxx and Secrets of a Thief for Seven Oak Stables!
Harlow Alenko and her horse, Alpha, stood at the start gait - drawing first out of the pair between her and her boyfriend, Ty Webber, to take the first ride in the Pairs Competition. She knew that they would enter the arena together, but naturally, she had nudged herself a bit more forward to watch the White's preform. Needless to say, Leo White was already making her roll her eyes and he hadn't even lined up at the fences yet, "Fists bumps in the show arena? Really?" Harlow hadn't bothered to hide her distain from Ty. A snort escaped Alpha beneath her, bobbing his head as if in agreement.
But then, chaos broke loose for her halflinger warmblood cross - not at the bell, not at Leo White's chestnut spitfire but surely that was part of it, but it was the yelling: "GET YOUR ASS GOING!" The unexpected noise combined with the hyperness of the show caused Alpha to pop. The young woman was startled as her horse popped up now, a half rear as his head threw. Her reins went slack as she grabbed his neck to save herself before he came down, "What the hell, Alp-" but she didn't even get to finish her sentence as he backed up, narrowly missing Captain and Ty. Harlow sat up quick, her seat deep as she drew in her reins, squeezing her legs to settle him and keep him forward, but he was dancing now.
How utterly horrifying - she missed all of Logan White's round dealing with this and people could fucking see her dealing with this. Do not loose your cool. She thought to herself as the gate popped open and they moved in - Harlow still keeping a strong grip on him as they walk-trotted to the starting line. The bell sounded and she let Alpha spring forward, trying to use the first lap around the arena to collect himself, but Alpha wasn't having it. He wanted to go - for once in his life - spurs were not needed, in fact, Alpha didn't seem to believe in strides either. He turned too soon, fighting Harlow towards the first jump. It was so small, only 85 cm, yet she heard the poll fall, followed by a second, and then a third on the oxer. An angry, frustrated sound escaped Harlow as she pulled back Alpha now, bringing his head up, and she forced him to make the two strides, and jump when she wanted to.
After that - it was like something clicked in Alpha's little brain, and the rest of the course - though hurried, was less chaotic as Harlow had reined him in, only allowing for speed after they cleared the final jump. Three fucking poles down. Harlow hadn't had something like that since she was a child. But now was the time for seething as they thundered their way to Ty and Captain now, slowing down quickly to pass off the baton - which seemed pointless - she was pretty certain she had cost them first place.
self-belief and hard work will always earn you success
Ty couldn't believe it was his idea to enter the pairs class with Harlow. He really should have entered his young stallion - given how small the jumps were but Harlow insisted on him taking Captain.
He had the grey stallion ready - after a few warm up jumps with John's supervision the pair headed up to the show ring. It was told to him that Harlow and Alpha would be going first so he turned the grey horse back to allow Harlow to go first. He was able to watch the first pair, knowing that they came from Seven Oaks.
As Harlow entered the arena, Ty nudged Captain into the ring just before the gate closed behind them. He quietly coached Harlow from by the gate - quietly chuckling as John was giving her similar instructions except a lot louder. As the pair crossed the finish line, Ty caught the baton himself - knowing that Harlow would not be happy with how she rode.
He shook his head and began riding, picking up the canter when the bell rang for him. The grey went up and forward - they had to be quick if they wanted to win the class. Ty kept his head up, finding a good approach to the first fence. Captain went up and over the first fence with ease as the rider steered towards the second fence.
The course went by with ease, Ty keeping a nice even pace throughout the course. He sat up and held the grey horse back after feeling the horse was going to rush through the combination. He squeezed his legs against the sides of his horse, wanting him to canter faster to cross the finish line. The red head smiled and brought the grey back to the walk, patting him on the neck as they left the arena. "Good job, Harlow." He gave her a sympathetic smile as he passed her - nothing was going to cheer his competitive girlfriend up but he hoped his good ride did something positive.
